Fall in Europe

F. Scott Fitzgerald once said “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall” and we couldn’t agree more. The bright hues of the leaves, the cool autumn air, and dozens of activities for everyone to enjoy are just a few reasons why fall is so magical.

Do you know what’s even more magical?

Fall in Europe.

Now don’t mistake us, Europe is one of our favorite destinations year-round and we love helping clients plan trips to this amazing continent, but there is something special about European towns and cities when the cool weather hits. The summer crowds have all but gone away and the holiday crowds have yet to appear, making it the perfect time to visit. From strolling along Europe’s most historic streets to hiking near lakeside villages or sampling all the culinary delights of the harvest, several destinations offer a host of reasons to visit in the fall.

Here are a few of our favorite European destinations - perfect for when sweater weather hits - but there are countless more beyond these few!

Bruges, Belgium is a European hotspot in the summer, but crowds dwindle down just as the leaves turn vibrant hues of orange and red for fall. The city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage City which is reflected in the Old World aesthetic, delicious food, historic landmarks, and friendly locals. We suggest partaking in a cruise through the canals, which is the best way to see the foliage and discover hidden gems within the city. Or, for a birds-eye view, you can climb to the top of the Belfort, pausing only to catch your breath in the old treasury.

If you’re willing to risk the chance of rain and spotty weather, then we would suggest a visit to Florence, Italy. October may be the off-season and have the occasional bout of rainy weather, but the countless activities to do in Florence, especially indoors, are sure to make sure your trip is memorable. Visit the Uffizi and the Galleria dell’Accademia to see some of history’s most amazing masterpieces, all the while staying warm and dry. However, what we love most about Italy in the fall are the countless festivals that take place to celebrate the harvest. Grape and wine festivals occur in September, mushrooms and chestnuts are celebrated in October, and dedicated fairs to white truffles and olive oil occur in November.

Since we are already talking about festivals, we have to mention Budapest, Hungary. Dozens of fairs and festivals take place in the fall to celebrate everything from theatre to food to music. The Budapest Pálinka and Sausage Festival takes place in early October and is quickly followed by the CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival. Considered to be one of Hungary’s most important cultural events, the CAFe features a showcase that includes classical music, jazz, theatre, poetry, and fine art. And in November, the New Cheese and Wine Festival comes to town, allowing visitors to sample the country’s best homemade cheeses and wine at the stunning Vajdahunyad Castle.

Though these are just a few of our European fall favorites there are many more we love. Europe truly comes alive during the autumn season, whether it be through countless festivals or the vibrant landscapes.
